Five Years

Its been five years without Joni.

Comments:
I was thinking of your cousin just the other day. A light was extinguished when he passed away.

Your blog is a lovely way to honor his memory.

Keep his memory alive!
I'd just like to say that one has to be very strong to handle a situation when going into the Orthodox community and things 'go wrong'. I came from a mixed background - my mother is Jewish father not. In my case I did get married to a Rabbi's daughter. But when things went wrong in our marriage - I got accused of not wanting to be Jewish (untrue) and yes everyone closed ranks and I was the outsider. The Get procedure was treated like a bit of a joke and I was treated as some pariah. I have lost contact with my children - all with the blessing of a Beth Din. It can drive a person to feel that life is not worth much. For me - the same strength that took me from teaching myself Hebrew, learning in a prestigious yeshiva and beyond, has helped me cope with the trials of life. I am a great believer in things happen for a reason and they happen for the best. Unfortunately that does not let established communities off the hook. Hashem hears the cries of the oppressed. Read the book of Jeremiah. Clearly Jews oppressing Jews led to exile. It's the worst thing we can do to each other. Jewish unity does not look at yichus. We should all remember that and treat our fellow Jews with equal respect - regardless of their status in life. It is the soul that is important
